Location: South Yarra, VIC
Nearly ten years after JPA&D designed the first Mankind premises in Surry Hills, Sydney, the client again approached us to undertake design and documentation for a new Mankind premises in Melbourne. Mankind Melbourne offers male grooming, skin care and massage similar to the Sydney premises, but with the addition of an in-house barber. As with the Sydney store the client was passionately involved selecting fittings and key signature furniture pieces to help establish the atmosphere of the interior.
The premises in Toorak Road, South Yarra provided a variety of challenges and opportunities. The narrow site and a floor level raised above the street, necessitated detailed attention when planning the space in order to meet current building regulations. An existing saw-tooth roof was retained and utilised to provide natural light to the corridor and the bank of treatment rooms were constructed as a ‘box within a box’ to retain the wonderful light that the saw tooth roof provides.
The treatment rooms contain custom made joinery with a hand basin, storage and a built in seat for customers to use when removing their shoes. Small details such as clothes hanging and a well-lit full length mirror add to the convenience of the customer experience.
As in Sydney, the polished concrete floor answered the requirements of both aesthetics and serviceability and the signature recessed display shelves that had been developed for the Sydney store were revisited in Melbourne to provide retail display with concealed storage below.
Thought and care was taken with the design to create a relaxing, welcoming and professional ambiance and lighting and finishes were developed in close consultation with the client to again create a fresh, clean aesthetic that it synonymous with the Mankind brand.
